As far as types of asana style, they are very different. Astanga yoga moves quickly through a set series of postures, and is always the same ninety-minute sequence that is very full of movement and meditative breath. Hatha yoga is more focused on alignment within a certain posture rather than flowing form posture to posture.

Astanga can also refer to the Eight Limbs of Yoga, because Astanga literally translates as Eight Limbs. This is a line of yogic philosophy that outlines all of the different ways to lead a fulfilling life that is giving to society and helps lead to enlightenment. Hatha Yoga is one of these eight limbs of yoga, which is meant to prepare the body for sitting in meditation.

I think that Astanga yoga is like Hatha yoga because you do a lot of the basic postures in Astanga practice.
