Ayurveda, the science of yoga, deals with questions like this through the doshas. There are three: Kapha (Water/Earth), Pitta (Fire) and Vata (Air/Ether). Winter is a Kapha and Vata aggravating season, with wind, cold air, and a lot of moisture and stagnancy in nature around you. People have a tendency to aggravate the dominant dosha. Asana is a heating (pitta aggravating) practice, and so we have a tendency to avoid this kind of activity during colder months. I think that is why it is difficult for many to get out of the house in the winter, because we’d rather stay in and hibernate to stay warm than kick up our own inner fire. – ShantiB

For me, I am a Pitta! So I have a harder time stopping myself from practicing than I do hibernating. I think Shanti’s answer makes perfect sense! I am sure I could benefit a bit from slowing down, at any time of year. - KaliGirl
