Standing postures - Balances
Posted by Guest10/22/2008 11:08:16 AM
I have been wondering whether there is a right - or left- way of doing standing postures, particularly balances? Does it matter with which leg one starts, to which side one orients onself? Should one stick to the same sequence or try to alternate the sequence for balance's sake? Anyone know?

If you have a strong home practice it is good to mix up the ways that you come into postures, and set up different sequences so you work different muscles every time. If it really helps you to stay centered to start on the same leg every time, by all means do that. But sometimes it’s good to work the brain and the body and keep things different.

I think it’s always good to alternate sequences. If you are the type of person that loves a routine, perhaps create two or three and alternate them. As far as coming into balances on a different leg each time, I don’t think that really matters. If you find that one leg is stronger than the other then perhaps you should try to change sides. It’s also good not to work to different levels on each side. Whatever you come to on one side, try to meet it, but not surpass it, on the other.

I always start on my right leg because I never remember what side I started on.
