Why is it important to maintain a neutral pelvis in many yoga postures and how do we accomplish this?

That question never ceases to make me think in my postures, as a teacher. I think that it’s crucial to keep the pelvis from tilting anteriorly or posteriorly because of it’s relationship to the back and the rest of the body. If you have too much of a tilt in any direction, it can either cinch or over extend your lower back.

A neutral pelvis in postures like Warrior 1 will help you keep your belly strong, low back lengthened, and ribs in. It is challenging to do in this posture but you do it by trying to point the tailbone down towards the ground.
