My father is 84 years old and has trouble sleeping. Do you have ideas for yoga postures he could do in order to get him to sleep throughout the night?

In the morning, you should try to do some energizing postures with him like Warrior 2 (maybe using a chair) and Triangle pose. In the evening, try to do some easy postures like seated twists with a chair or neck rolls. It might be good for him to elevate his feet for five minutes or so. You can do this on a variety of levels, most intense being laying on the back with the legs going vertically up the wall. When it’s time for bed, try the savasana exercise where you work from your toes up to the head, relaxing each part of your body. Good luck! Hope this helps!

It might be nice to do some restorative yoga with him before bed. Poses like Fish/ Matsyasana or Bridge/ Setu Bandha Sarvangasana with a bolster can be really nice and restful. You can do child’s pose with a twist over a pillow as well. Bed yoga can be fun, try reclined twist (Jathara Parivartanasana) with a pillow between the knees. Hope this helps! - WeekendWarrior

Something else you may try could be doing a fifteen minute routine with him every afternoon, getting a little more vigorous every time. Simple breath work with big circles of the arms can build heat and flexibility in the shoulders. Easy Chair Pose or Tree Pose using a chair or the wall for balance can help him work his body and his strength. This little bit of exercise might make him more ready to rest at night. - CHATuranga
